Otherworldly Nature Photography by Inna Etuvgi
ABOUT:
Inna Etuvgi is a Swedish-Chukchi art photographer whose work is shaped by her unique heritage and her experience with Aphantasia—an inability to visualize mental imagery.
Raised in the remote Arctic, where survival depends on sensitivity to nature’s smallest signs, Etuvgi’s art reflects a profound respect for life’s fragile balance. Through her macro photography, she magnifies the intricate details of mosses, lichens, and other overlooked organisms, urging viewers to see their quiet resilience and essential role in sustaining ecosystems. Her work challenges the human-centered worldview, elevating these unsung heroes of nature to remind us of the interconnectedness that binds all living things.
Etuvgi’s Aphantasia acts as a catalyst for her creativity. Unable to visualize images internally, she turns to nature as both a mirror and a muse, finding reflections of her inner world in the smallest corners of the Earth. Her dewdrop photography explores how nature can reflect our inner landscapes, illustrating the deep bond between humans and the natural world.
Expanding her practice, Etuvgi incorporates AI and generative digital art to explore themes of identity, belonging, and the tension between tradition and technology. This intersection of organic forms and digital tools allows her to examine how we, as humans, navigate both social and ecological systems. Her art becomes a meditation on the human experience in a fast-evolving, technology-driven society. Art critic
Art critic Tabish Khan captures the essence of her work: “Whether she's taking us close to the Earth at its smallest scale or creating fantastical figures covered in plant life through digital art, her work is about transporting us to other worlds—both real and imaginary, but always in harmony with nature.”
At the heart of Etuvgi’s art is a reminder: as humanity marches into the future, armed with powerful technologies, we must remember our place within the fragile, interconnected web of life. Her work encourages care, awareness, and love for the world around us—because the more we understand and connect with nature, the more we learn to care about it.
